The US Mega Millions is known for smashing records and in March 2012 it took things to a whole new level. Five years earlier, to the month, Mega Millions overtook the then world record jackpot of $365 million - held by fellow American lottery US Powerball – with a whopping $390 million jackpot that proved to have an exceptionally long shelf life.
Perhaps it was Powerball officials' January 2012 announcement of a new $40 million starting jackpot as well as their ambition of offering the first jackpot worth more than $500 million that again kicked Mega Millions, and an army of fans, into gear for some magnificent March madness. The result was a new world record from the reigning lotto champion, with a not insignificant $266 million increase to $656 million!
