Records: Fun to Make, Fun to Break

Records are made to be broken! Record-makers and breakers aren't just for the lottery world-take a look at the world records we dug up when thinking about South Africa Lotto's record-breaking R 57 million jackpot that has earned the Southern hemisphere's star lotto a #1 spot on theSmart!

As the National Lottery of South Africa continues to navigate uncharted jackpot territory, lotto fans are eagerly anticipating the R 57 million draw (US $6,154,290) scheduled for Wednesday, April 24th.  The last time the South African Lotto soared this high was over a decade ago when a player claimed a whopping R 44.7 million, or US $4,826,259, in February of 2003. This lotto's ground breaking record jackpot is quite a milestone for the 13 year old lottery game!

Lotto fans can't mention records without mentioning Mega Millions in the same breath! The American Mega Millions lottery reached unprecedented heights in March of last year with a "megaton" of winnings and a US $656 million top prize. This colossal lottery prize raised the bar for lottery jackpot records across the globe and the final sum was split between three players from Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland.

Last year was also a milestone year for US Powerball, as a 14 roll-over phenomenon shook the lotto world, creating a massive $588 million prize! By breaking its jackpot record, Powerball moved towards its goal of achieving a $1 billion jackpot with this $500+ million prize; mission half-way accomplished!

Once we started thinking about lottery records, other records followed.  Have you ever wondered what the world record is for the biggest mouth? What about how much you would have to pay for the world's most expensive Christ mas tree? Check out some of these bizarre and fun world-records below!
